This new performance sees Gwenno celebrate the life and work of patchwork pioneer and poet Edrica Huws, through electronica, voice and visuals. The performance will explore the impact of motherhood on creativity, and the parallels between creating modern electronic music using found sound and the ritual of patchwork stitching, accompanied by animation by Tad Davies.

Edrica Huws (1907-1999) graduated from the Royal College of Art as a mural painter. Living in a house with a growing family, the inspiration came as much from her wanting to develop and challenge herself as an artist as it did out of the practicalities of domestic life. Edrica completed her first work at 51 and enjoyed international acclaim towards the end of her life.

In the modern era, and within a musical context there are parallels to be made between stitching and creating electronic music. Both are approached with a meticulous eye/ear for detail and can fit within a domestic life setting (particularly in the context of laptop music). Having access to a computer has freed women to connect artistically to the modern creative world from their homes, much in the same way that Edrica Huws found her path towards artistic freedom by utilising the cloth and thread that surrounded her.

"I want to continue exploring things sonically and thematically, and I think that the themes that I've honed in on I feel really excited about, and I want to develop those ideas. I instinctively write pop songs, and it's about working away and developing the sound and structures and trying to be playful with it. I want to push the boundaries of what I do." Gwenno

Mae'n braf iawn gallu croesawu'r gantores seic-pop, yr artist sain, y DJ a'r gyflwynwraig radio Gwenno Saunders (enillydd Gwobr Gerddoriaeth Gymreig 2015) i roi perfformiad sydd wedi'i gomisiynu'n arbennig ar gyfer Gwyl y Llais 2018.

Yn y sioe hon bydd Gwenno’n dathlu bywyd a gwaith Edrica Huws, y bardd a’r arloeswraig ym myd clytwaith, a hynny drwy berfformiad electronig byw yn llawn sain a llun. Bydd hefyd yn edrych ar effaith bod yn fam ar greadigrwydd, a'r pethau sy’n debyg rhwng creu cerddoriaeth electronig fodern a’r grefft o bwytho clytwaith.

Graddiodd Edrica Huws (1907-2007) o’r Coleg Celf Brenhinol fel arlunydd. A hithau’n byw mewn ty gyda theulu ifanc heb drydan na dwr tap, daeth yr ysbrydoliaeth yn gymaint o’i hawydd i’w datblygu a’i herio'i hun fel artist ag a wnaeth o anghenion ymarferol bywyd bob dydd. Cwblhaodd Edrica ei gwaith cyntaf yn 51 oed, ac enillodd fri rhyngwladol tua diwedd ei hoes.

Yn yr oes fodern, ac mewn cyd-destun cerddorol, mae sawl peth tebyg rhwng gwnïo a chreu cerddoriaeth electronig. Gyda’r ddau gyfrwng, mae’n rhaid bwrw ati gyda llygad barcud neu glust fain ryfeddol, a gall y naill beth a’r llall gyd-fynd â bywyd teuluol gartref (yn enwedig yng nghyd-destun cerddoriaeth ar y gliniadur). Mewn sawl ffordd, mae’r gallu i ddefnyddio cyfrifiadur wedi rhyddhau menywod i gysylltu’n artistig yn y byd creadigol modern o’u cartrefi, yn yr un modd ag y daeth Edrica Huws o hyd i lwybr tuag at ryddid artistig drwy ddefnyddio’r brethyn a’r edau a oedd o’i hamgylch.

"Rwy eisie parhau i archwilio pethau’n seiniol ac yn thematig, ac rwy’n teimlo’n gyffrous iawn am y themâu sydd gen i, ac rwy eisie datblygu’r syniadau hyn. Rwy’n sgwennu caneuon pop yn reddfol, ac mae’r gwaith hwn yn golygu symud i ffwrdd o hynny a datblygu’r seiniau a’r strwythurau a bod yn chwareus. Rwy eisie gwthio'r ffiniau." Gwenno
