Last week two major demonstrations took place in London – the “Day of Freedom” organised by the Football Lads Alliance, and the anti-abortionists “Movement for Choice”. Both purported to be defending free speech but were in fact attacks on oppressed groups within society (Muslims and women).
Socialists have long used the policy of “no platforming” Nazis by disrupting and picketing their speeches, and many students have extended this to other groups – such as feminists who object to transgender rights. Meanwhile universities across the country are shutting down Palestine societies’ meetings as they claim they are inviting anti-semitism.
The right wing press and politicians claim “political correctness” stops them from airing their views and fears, but what exactly is PC? Should we defend all freedom of speech regardless of whether we agree? And who decides what is acceptable or not? Come to our meeting to discuss these important questions.
